Custom Built Carports in Austin, TX

A custom wooden carport is a structure similar to a pergola or a pavilion except that it is made to cover vehicles instead of people. Depending on the size and number of vehicles covered, a standard one-car carport will be approximately 10’ x 20’ and a two-car carport will be around 20’ x 20’. Other options include privacy fence, storage area, gates, etc.

The main consideration when planning a carport build is the building setback on your property. Backyard pergolas often do not need city approval because they are not usually visible from the street and are not on the property line. Carports are opposite — they are typically in a front yard and offset to one side or the other, making them close to the property line. Most cities and neighborhoods in and around Austin have at least a 5’ setback, meaning that you cannot build any permanent structures within 5’ of the building line. The easiest way to find your building line (usually labeled B.L. on the survey) is by looking on your survey.
